Mass Spec Lab

Preston Cloud Building

The NOISE Lab mass spectrometry lab hosts two mass spectrometers.

ICP-MS: Our Nu Plasma 3 Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Picard) is typically coupled to an Aridus 3 desolvating nebulizer for analyzing aqueous samples. The P3 can measure elements spanning most of the periodic table, but we primarily use it to measure sulfur isotope ratios.

EA-IRMS: Our Nu Horizon Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (Janeway) is coupled to an Elementar Vario Isotope Select Elemental Analyzer for analyses of C/N/S elemental ratios, carbon isotopes, and sulfur isotopes in a wide range of organic and inorganic materials.

Wet Chemistry Lab

Preston Cloud Building

Our wet chemistry lab has separate workspaces for inorganic and organic sample prep and a cleanroom space for evaporating and purifying sulfates.

IC: We run a Metrohm Ion Chromatograph to measure concentrations of ions like sulfate in solution.

We use this extraction line to distill sulfides from rocks, particles, cells, and other samples.
